Helping Individuals with criminal records Reenter through Employment

Helping Justice-Involved Individuals with Mental or Substance Use Disorders, or Both:

Most justice-involved individuals, particularly those with substance use and/or mental health disorders, face numerous obstacles that make it difficult to fully participate in society.  There are structural barriers, including laws and policies that may impede their access to jobs, housing and education as well as personal challenges.  However, with a little help, support, and planning these individuals may overcome and mitigate the negative impact of a criminal record.  

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what criminal records are, where they are kept, who can see them, and how they are used in employment, housing, and higher education.
  • Understand legal and practical challenges faced by individuals with substance use and/or mental health disorders.
  • Understand federal and state laws that offer legal protections for people with substance use and/or mental health disorders and criminal records.
  • Understand what evidence of rehabilitation is and how to gather it.
  • Understand how drug court and other reentry professionals can help individuals successfully nagivage reentry.
  • Identify on-line and community-based local resources that provide information and service for people with criminal records.


Drug court professionals, treatment and health support team members, particularly re-entry providers such as peer-support coaches, mentors, outreach workers and others who are dedicated to helping people with criminal records live healthy and successful lives.
